<p>A regular smoker is likely to have their life expectancy reduced by up to ten years. Do you really want to lose ten years of your life when you don&#8217;t have to? Coupled with this is the likely prospect that the latter few years of your life if you are a regular smoker are likely to be of poor quality due to some heart or lung disease that could have been avoided.
<p>The adverse effects on one&#8217;s health through smoking are manifest in the lungs, the blood circulatory system and the heart. In the lungs the constant irritation of inhaled smoke causes damage leading to reduced lung capacity and bronchitis. The lining of the airways tends to lose its cilia, the little hair-like protuberances which help to clear them of mucous and contaminants so that infection in the lungs becomes more likely. Older people who are regular smokers are more likely to succumb to a bout of flu and a secondary infection because of damaged lungs.
<p>The effect of nicotine on the blood vessels is to constrict them, and, since the small blood vessels that supply blood to the heart, are all ready narrow and may have been further narrowed by a build up of plaque (atherosclerosis) which is very common, the last thing you need is further narrowing and restriction of blood flow. Such further restriction can easily lead to arterial blockage and a heart attack.
<p>These serious health risks should be enough in themselves to persuade you to give up smoking but if you are young you may dismiss all this as being too far into the future for you to worry about. If you not heed the advice and give up now though, you will surely regret it in the future.
<p>If you need good reasons to stop smoking right now then there are both social and financial reasons that can affect you right now. Financially you can be surprisingly better off if you don&#8217;t buy cigarettes. Most smokers, like most drinkers, seriously underestimate the amount of money they spend on the habit. If you put aside the money you would have spent and save it for two to three months, you could have a sizeable sum &#8211; enough to buy a new bike or an Armani suit probably! Your lifestyle would have improved as, not only will you be feeing more fit and healthy but you will have more money in your pocket.
<p>Smoking is generally becoming less and less socially acceptable. It is now banned in many public places including even pubs, once the safe haven for the inveterate smoker. You will not find ash trays in restaurants so much these days, let alone the workplace. You will feel like an outcast if you have to excuse yourself from a social gathering to nip out the back for a quick cigarette.

<p>Let&#8217;s begin with looking at the advertising industry&#8217;s past and present roles in glamorizing smoking.<br />Let&#8217;s look at their many tactics, both obvious and subtle, that successfully lure millions of people into nicotine addiction.
<p>Stop and consider where your image of smoking came from. When did inhaling thousands of toxic, cancer-causing fumes become the image of cool? For most people, the answer to that question is simple. It came from advertising. Your image of cigarettes, one you may not even be aware of, has been carefully crafted by highly paid, skilled marketing executives who are employed by multi-billion dollar tobacco corporations. These marketing moguls definitely know what they are doing.
<p>Their ads don&#8217;t paint the honest picture of cigarettes- what cigarettes contain and the harm that they cause. Have you ever seen an ad from a tobacco company which mentions that when you inhale cigarette smoke, you are taking in some of the same chemicals that are used to systematically kill rodents?
<p>During the 50s and 60s, cigarette ads, whether in the form of television commercials, print ads in newspapers and magazines, or larger than life advertisements on outdoor billboards were always alluring, always appealing, and usually targeting a specific audience. There was the macho &#8220;Marlboro Man,&#8221; a rugged cowboy with a cigarette dangling from his mouth- an image that personified manliness. In the 1960s, the introduction of Virginia Slims brand cigarettes and its &#8220;You&#8217;ve Come a Long Way, Baby&#8221; campaign targeted the growing population of women smokers by appealing to their sense of independence.
<p>Advertisers had a field day with catchy cigarette slogans and popular phrases like &#8220;Winston Tastes Good like a Cigarette Should,&#8221; &#8220;L&#038;M. Just What the Doctor Ordered,&#8221; and &#8220;Us Tareyton Smokers Would Rather Fight Than Switch.&#8221;
<p>Think about &#8220;Joe Camel,&#8221; a cigarette-smoking cartoon camel. Supposedly, this image was created to attract young smokers, mostly between 18 and 25, to choose the Camel Brand. The seemingly amicable cartoon character also begun to attract and appeal to young children.
<p>A 1991 article published in the Journal of American Medical Association showed that children who were just sex years old were able to recognize Joe Camel more than 90% of the time- about as often as they were able to identify the Micky Mouse logo used on the Disney Channel.
<p>It was also concluded that it was the intention of the campaign to directly market to children. In 1997, under increasing criticism and pressure from anti-smoking groups, the Federal Trade Commission, and US Congress, the maker of Camel cigarettes voluntarily ended the use of Joe Camel in its ads.
<p>The bottom line is this: Tobacco companies invest significant capital to make you think of positive images, be it sexy, beauty, independence, intelligence, wealth or popularity every time you see a cigarette. And it works.
<p>So think about how you started smoking, and understand that you were systematically duped. The question now is, how can you stop?

<p>For me quitting smoking was one of the hardest things in life to do. I was a heavy smoker for the past 12 years. I started out as a half a pack a day then started smoking about a pack and a half. Smoking has ruined the past twelve years of my life. I almost lost my wife because of how much I started smoking. This past year she gave me an ultimatum, quit smoking or quit me. I didn&#8217;t want to lose the person I have spent the last 5 years with, so I tried everything and nothing seemed to work. I tried the patch, gum, pills, and I was still smoking over a pack a day. Those never satisfied me the way true analog cigarettes did. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> I just quit smoking, and I&#8217;m doing ok. I have been successful at quitting cigarettes in the past, but it wasn&#8217;t as easy as this time. But then again, I have always, sooner or later, started up again. This time I think is going to be different. But I&#8217;ll get to that in a bit.<br /> I decided to quit smoking about a month ago. I didn&#8217;t want to rush into it cold turkey, as I have in the past, as it seems to make me a little ugly for a period of time. Not quite the sweet old Daniel I usually am after a day or two without a cigarette. Before, I lived by myself. Now, I share my home with the woman I love, and she doesn&#8217;t deserve the attitude I may get.<br /> So I start looking for something other than the usual smoking remedies. I found several sites that promote self hypnosis and neuro-linguistic-programming ( NLP ), which is a form of psychotherapy.
